Emotions & Music

“Music is what feelings sound like” ~ Author Unknown

Why is it that music has such a deep connection with our emotions? Have you ever been having a bad day, or just not feeling yourself when you come across a song that sums up your emotions perfectly?

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.  ~Berthold Auerbach”

It’s absolutely amazing how much of an effect music has on our emotions. I have certain artists or songs that I only use for certain occasions because it just works. For example the song “Breathe You In” by Thousand Foot Krutch; I always listen to it when I am super stressed about to go in panic attack mode. There is just something so soothing abou the song that it helps me instantly calm down.

“Without music life would be a mistake.  ~Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche”

Music allows us to discover our emotions without words or coversation. It allows us to worship with our hearts, connect with another person, or to help us come to important decisions.

“I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours.  But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places.  Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality.  ~H.A. Overstreet”

“Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.  ~Ludwig van Beethoven”

I’m Dreaming in Red and She Paints Me Blue: Colorful Music

Yes I know this is not a music blog but –

Have you ever noticed the color involved in the emotional aspect of music? It just struck me the other day when I was studying; I had my MP3 on a playlist, and it played two amazing songs in a row. The first one was Dreaming in Red by the Calling and the second was She Paints Me Blue by Something Corporate. Now this may not seem significant in any way, shape or form, but it is! The use of these two colors tie in with the themes of the songs to change the whole feeling you get about them. Red is a vibrant and exciting color, so dreaming in red brings to mind an exciting day dream, or maybe his life is like a brilliant dream. In the other song the color blue makes you think of sadness, lonelyness, or maybe even peace.

Here are some other cool “colorful” songs I found –

Red Sam by Flyleaf

Falling Inside the Black by Skillet

Blue Burns Orange by Hawthorne Heights

Snow White Queen by Evanescence

Blood Red Summer by Third Eye Blind

Black Balloon by Goo Goo Dolls

Blue Orchid by White Stripes

It’s actually quite amazing how many songs use color to express emotion. I am sure you could find more with some time
